why do you have swans in your fields?

Trumpeter Swans overwinter on our Comox Valley farm, these majestic birds were nearly wiped out in the 1930’s from overhunting, but are now making a comeback in North America, thanks to the conservation efforts of Ducks Unlimited and others. These birds thrive in flooded farmlands, freshwater, and coastal estuarine wetlands, making the Comox Bay Farm ideal habitat for them.

what is agroecological farming?

Agroecology is an integrated approach that simultaneously applies ecological and social concepts and principles to the design and management of food and agricultural systems. It seeks to optimize the interactions between plants, animals, humans, and the environment while taking into consideration the social aspects that need to be addressed for a sustainable and fair food system.

Agroecology is not a new invention. It can be identified in scientific literature since the 1920’s, and has found expression in family farmers’ practices, in grassroots social movements for sustainability, and the public policies of various countries around the world.

Is all your meat grass-fed?

Yes. Grass-fed has significantly lower levels of saturated fat compared to grain-fed. In addition to being packed with B vitamins, grass-fed has been found to be higher in vitamins A, E, and other antioxidants compared to grain-fed.

Not all animals can survive on grass alone, so we feed our pigs and chickens a non-GMO grain ration that is specifically formulated for us on the Island. We also grow a lot of our own grains, spray-free, which we feed to our grain-eating critters. These animals still have plenty of access to grass, which they readily consume to supplement and enrich their grain diets.

do you use antibiotics?

We never ever routinely use antibiotics. If we have a sick animal it is treated individually, removed from the herd and its withdrawal time is tripled. Because we grow our livestock in such a healthy natural environment we have very rarely had to use antibiotics.

The welfare of our livestock and our consumers is important to us. We have a common-sense approach to using any medication, however, we will Favour the use of homeopathic and natural remedies over chemicals.

what about growth hormones and steroids?

We absolutely use no growth hormones or steroids in the raising of our animals.

What is your involvement with ducks unlimited?

Lentelus leases three farms from Ducks Unlimited in the Comox Valley. Ducks Unlimited has a mandate to support farmers that work with conservation. It is a great privilege to be working with one of the largest conservation groups in North America. DU has made it possible for me to farm with an eye to the future, by providing me with 20-year farm leases. This way I can truly benefit from making long-term conservation science-based decisions on the lands that I manage.
